API Spec 5L Carbon Steel Seamless Pipelines
API specification 5L carbon steel seamless pipeline is suitable for use in conveying gas, water, and oil in both the oil and natural gas industries. It includes plain end, threaded end, and belled end pipe, as well as through the flowline pipe and pipe with ends prepared for use with special couplings.
Seamless process
The seamless process is process of hot working steel to form a tubular product without a welded seam. If necessary, the hot worked tubular product may be subsequently cold finished to meet the desire shape, dimensions and properties.
Product levels and grades
There are two levels, PSL1 and PSL in API Spec 5L standard.
PSL1 pipe can be supplied in grades A25 through X70.
PSl2 pipe can be supplied in grades B through X80.
Dimension
PSL1 pipe can be manufactured in sizes ranging from10.3mm to 2032mm.
PSL2 pipe can be manufactured in sizes ranging from114.3mm to 2032mm.

Carbon equivalent
For grade X80 pipe, for all grades of seamless pipe having a specified wall thickness greater than 20.3mm, and for pipe designed by the purchaser as high carbon equivalent pipe, the value agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Others, a CE (C031) is not exceed 0.25% or a CE (C030) is not exceed 0.43%, whichever is applicable.
Calculation of carbon equivalent for PSL2 only
1. When the carbon content is less than or equal to 0.12%, the carbon equivalent shall be calculated as below,
CE(C031)=C+Si/30+Mn/20+Cu/20+Ni/60+Cr/20+Mo/15+V/10+5B
2. When the carbon content is greater than 0.12%, the carbon equivalent shall be calculated using the following formula,
CE(C030)=C+Mn/6+(Cr+Mo+V)/5+(Ni+Cu)/15
Pipeline coatings
Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, pipe shall be furnished either uncoated (bare) or with a temporary external coating to minimize rusting in transit, temporary coatings shall be hard to the touch and smooth, with minimum sags.
