The Differences Between Slip-on Flanges And Weld Neck Flange

Mar 31, 2025

Slip-on Flanges

Slip-on flange is a type of flange that is inserted into a pipeline and is fixed by two fillet welds (one inside and one outside). This flange is easy to install and is commonly used in low and medium pressure applications where quick installation and disassembly are required.

Weld Neck Flanges

Weld neck flange provides strong, secure connection in pipeline systems involving high pressure or high temperature environments. Its unique construction consists of a tapered hub connected by an extended neck that gradually transitions into the pipe. This design helps distribute stress evenly, ensuring a seamless connection that minimizes turbulence or erosion at its junction. Weld neck flanges are commonly used in high temperature and high pressure applications.

Compare the key differences between Slip-on Flanges and Weld Neck Flanges

1. Installation complexity: The structure of slip-on flanges is simple, without the bulky hub and neck found on weld neck flanges. This design makes it easy to quickly install and daily maintenance.

2. Connection strength: The connection strength of slip-on flanges is not as strong as weld neck flanges due to they are welded by two fillet weld instead of full-penetration welding process.

3. Strength and high-pressure resistance: Compared to slip-on flanges, weld neck flanges are more capable of withstanding the tests from high temperature and high pressure environments. While slip-on flanges are commonly used in low and medium pressure environments.

In summary, the main differences between slip-on flanges and weld neck flanges lie in their strength, application, and convenience. In particular, weld neck flanges can maintain excellent connection strength in high pressure and high temperature environments, while slip-on flanges can only be used in low pressure environments.

On other hand, slip-on flanges are easy to install and disassembly, convenient for daily maintenance and replacement, which can save maintenance costs.
