Installation method of eccentric reducer
The installation method of the eccentric head is very clear, and the core principle is to prevent the formation of "air pockets" or "liquid pockets" in the pipeline, thereby avoiding damage to equipment (especially pumps) or affecting the process.
The installation direction is mainly divided into two types: "top flat" and "bottom flat". In industrial scenarios, the most common and important application of eccentric reducers is in the inlet pipeline of centrifugal pumps. The specific installation method chosen depends on the fluid flow direction and medium characteristics.
Pump inlet pipeline: the most critical installation scenario
Installing eccentric reducers at the inlet of the pump is mainly to prevent cavitation (a serious phenomenon that damages the pump impeller due to gas entering).
1.Top flat installation (flat side on top):
| Applicable situation | When the medium flows into the pump horizontally or from bottom to top. |
| Function | Ensure that the top of the reducer is flat. In this way, the naturally generated small bubbles in the pipeline will not accumulate into "air pockets" at the variable diameter, but will be smoothly carried into the pump inlet by the fluid and discharged with the liquid, thereby preventing cavitation. |
2.Bottom flat installation (flat side below):
| Applicable situation | When the medium flows into the pump from top to bottom. |
| Function | Ensure that the bottom of the reducer is flat. This can prevent the formation of a "liquid bag" (a low-lying area where liquid cannot flow away) at the variable diameter, avoiding pressure build-up or poor flow. |
No matter how the medium flows, the core is to 'prevent gas from stopping at the pump port'. Therefore, "flat top" is the default choice in most cases, because gas always runs upwards, and only by making it flat can it have nowhere to hide.
Other horizontal pipelines: considering the characteristics of the medium
If the eccentric head is not used at the pump inlet, but on a general horizontal pipeline, the selection criteria are based on the medium being transported:
| Top flat installation | used for conveying pure gas or single fluid without impurities. The purpose is to prevent the accumulation of gas at the top of the pipeline and avoid the formation of gas resistance that affects the flow rate. |
| Bottom flat installation | used for transporting fluids containing solid particles or impurities (such as mud, sewage, and media that are prone to rust). The purpose is to allow impurities to pass smoothly through the bottom of the pipeline, avoiding sedimentation in low-lying areas of variable diameter, thereby preventing blockage. |
Core principles of installation

The eccentric head should be installed as close as possible to the pump inlet flange to maximize its protective effect.

Adhere to the principle of "not forming air bags/liquid bags": this is the final criterion for selecting all installation methods. In any case, as long as an area where gas or liquid stagnates inside the pipeline is formed after installation, it is the wrong installation method.
