Description
The origin of the forged steel
The early forging techniques originated in China and Persia (Iran now). The traditional forged steel is made by blacksmith. Since the 19th century, modern forged steel technology has been born. In order to forge steel, workers must heat the metal at high temperature to shape it. Forged steel pipe has been used in plenty of industries.
Forging method
We use forging machine to put pressure on the metal billets and make it deformation so as to obtain forgings with certain mechanical properties, shape and size, that is, forging. The properties and microstructure of the metal will be changed during the forging process. The method of forging is mainly divided into free forging, die forging and upsetting forging.
Common defects in forged steel
The common defects of forged steel include forging crack, forging folding, forging overburning. Hair lines, white spots, inclusions, layering will be found on the forgings surface.
Introduction of ASTM A369 specification
ASTM A369 heavy wall carbon and alloy steel pipes are made from turned forgings and are intended for high-temperature service. These pipe is suitable for bending and other forming operations and for fusion welding. Selection will depend on design, service conditions, mechanical properties and high temperature characteristics. The finished pipe shall be reasonably straight and shall have a workmanlike finish.

Manufacture procedures
Material for forging shall consist of ingots or of blooms, billets, or solid-rolled bars forged or rolled from an ingot, and cut to the required length by a process that will not produce injurious defects in the forging.
The material shall be forged by hannering or pressing, and shall be brought as nearly as practicable to the finished shape and size by hot working.
Unless otherwise specified, the final forging operation shall be followed by a treatment suitable to the grade.
Machining of the ASTM A369 carbon steel pipe
All forgings shall have both the inner and outer surfaces machined. After heat treatment, the pipe shall be machined to a finish with a roughness value no greater than 250-μin.
