Differences Between Butt Welded And Socket Welded

Feb 14, 2025

What is Socket welded ?

Socket welded is a type of welding method used to connect small diameter steel pipes. Socket welded suitable for connection of two steel pipes of different sizes, where the smaller pipe is inserted into the larger one. Compared with the butt welded, the welding technique is relatively easy to install, only requires basic welding skills. Despite socket welded is also used under high pressure, it is not suitable for pipeline systems that are sensitive to corrosion and require high cleanliness due to poor stress conditions after welding, which can lead to incomplete welding penetration.

What is Butt welded?

Butt welding refers to connect two steel pipes of the same or similar diameter. Two steel pipes that are connected by butt welded has excellent connection strength and sealing performance, avoiding the risk of leaking during using under high pressure and high temperature environments, which makes them suitable for high pressure or temperature applications. Despite the process of butt welding is more complicated, compared with socket welded, butt welded provide higher connection strength under high pressure applications.

In summary, socket welded and butt welded each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Socket welded is more simple to install and suitable for smaller diameter steel pipes. While butt welded offer superior strength, durability, making them a ideal choice for larger diameter steel pipes and high pressure pipeline systems.
