ASTM A53 Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Pipe

ASTM A53 hot dipped galvanized steel pipe in DN6 to DN650 (10.3-660.4mm) with nominal wall thickness. this is intended for mechanical and pressure applications and is also acceptable for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.

ASTM A53 specification covers the following types and grades:

Type F- Furnace butt welded, continuous welded Grade A

Type E- Electric resistance welded, Grade A and B

Type S- Seamless, Grade A and B

It is suitable for welding, and suitable for forming operations involving coiling, bending, and flanging, subject to the following qualifications;

Type F is not intended for flanging.

If Type S or Type E is required for close coiling or cold bending, Grade A is the preferred Grade. however, this is not intended to prohibit the cold bending of Grade B pipe.

Type E is furnished either nonexpanded or cold expanded at the option of the manufacturer.

Tensile requirements 

Zinc coating of the ASTM A53 steel pipe

The coating on the steel pipe shall meet the requirements of ASTM A153 Specification. The tension, flattening, and bend tests shall be made on the base material before galvanizing. Galvanized pipe ordered under this specification shall be coated with zinc inside and outside by the hot-dip process. The zinc-coated pipes shall be free from uncoated areas, blisters, flux deposits, dross inclusions, and other types of projections that would interfere with the intended use of the pipes, or other defects not consistent with good galvanizing practice. The zinc coating shall be reasonably smooth and uniform in thickness.

The weight (mass) per unit area of zinc coating shall be not less than 0.55kg/㎡. The weight (mass) per unit area of coating, expressed in ounces per square foot shall be calculated by dividing the total weight of zinc, inside plus outside, by the total area, inside plus outside, of the surface coated.
