Malleable iron, also called as malleable steel, is made of casting iron, and its performance is close to that of steel.

The history of malleable iron in our country

China is one of the countries with a long history of malleable iron production. As early as the Warring States period, the malleable iron technology has appeared. The carbon combined with iron from white casting iron is separated out by heat treatment to become graphite. Because this metal is workable and ductile, it was extensively used in military and agricultural production at that time.

Technology process

Malleable iron is made from white casting iron which is poured and cast by molten iron with certain chemical composition, and then annealed.

White casting iron with low carbon and silicon is placed in neutral medium for graphitization treatment, kept for dozens of hours at 850~950℃, and then cooled to 720~740℃ in the furnace for more than ten hours. At last, the malleable iron with the ferrite of graphite is gained.

The characteristics of malleable iron

Malleable iron has high strength, plasticity and impact toughness, and it can partially replace carbon steel. Impact performance is greater in low temperature. Wear-resistance and shock absorption are better than those of carbon steel. It can be used for shock or vibration and twist load parts and accessories, and it is commonly used to manufacture automobile rear axle, spring support, low pressure valves, pipe joints, tool wrenches, etc.

The main components of malleable iron are low carbon, medium silicon and appropriate manganese- sulfur ratio. It can also use scrap steel, even steel chips and iron chips as the primary raw material. Malleable iron casting has the advantages of low cost, high efficiency, uniform quality, mature workmanship and stable performance. It is a large branch of the casting industry, and also an ancient engineering material.
