Material of ASTM A420 pipe fittings

The starting material for fittings shall be fully killed steel, consisting of forgings, bars, paltes, sheet, and seamless or fusion welded tubular products with filler metal added and shall conform to the chemical requirements listed as follows, when fittings are of welded construction, the symbols below shall be supplemented by the letter "W".

Charpy impact requirements

The steels manufactured pipe fitting shall be made using recognized melting practices necessary to produce steels that shall meet the impact requirements of ASTM A420 specification.

Product marking

In addition to marking requirements of specification A960/A960M, the following additional marking requirements shall apply:

Fittings shall be marked by any method which will identify the fittings and not result in sharp discontinuities.

The markings shall be painted or stenciled on the fitting or stamped on a metal or plastic tag which shall be securely attached to the fitting.

Fittings containing welds that have been ultrasonically examined instead of radiography shall be marked U after heat identity.

Threaded or socket welding fittings shall be marked with the pressure class.

The impact test temperature shall also be shown if it is different from the standard test temperature.
