ASTM A193 Alloy Steel and Stainless Steel Bolts

 

ASTM A193 specification covers alloy and stainless steel bolting material for pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and fittings for high-temperature service. The term bolting material as used in this specification covers bars, bolts, screws, studs, stud bolts, and wire. Bars and wire shall be hot-wrought. The material may be further processed by centerless grinding or by cold drawing.

 

Steel grade

Ferritic steel quality: B5, B6, B6X, B7, B7M, B16

Austenitic steel quality: B8, B8A, B8C, B8CA, B8M, B8MA, B8M2, B8M3, B8N, B8NA, B8MN, B8MNA, B8MLCuN, B8MLCuNA, B8T, B8TA, B8R, B8RA, B8S, B8SA, B8LN, B8LNA, B8MLN, B8MLNA

 

Heat-treated condition for austenitic stainless steel materials

Class 1, carbide solution treated

Class1A, carbide solution treated after finishing

Classes 2, 2B and 2C, carbide solution treated and strain-hardened

Class 1B and 1C, carbide solution-treated nitrogen-bearing stainless steels

Class 1D, materials carbide solution treated by cooling rapidly from the rolling temperature

 

Appearance of ASTM A193 bolts

Bolts, screws, studs, and stud bolts shall be pointed and shall have a workmanlike finish. Points shall be flat and chamfered or rounded at option of the manufacturer. Length of point on studs and stud bolts shall be not less than one nor more than two complete threads as measured form the extreme end parallel to the axis. Length of studs and stud bolts shall be measured from first thread to first thread.
