Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) is a floating vessel used in the offshore oil and gas industry to produce and process hydrocarbons and store oil.
FPSO vessels are designed to receive hydrocarbons produced by themselves or from nearby platforms or seafloor templates, treat them and store oil until they can be unloaded onto tankers or transported by pipeline, which is not very frequent.
FPSOs are preferred in border and offshore areas because they are easy to install and do not require local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. An FPSO can be a modification of an oil tanker (such as Seawise Giant) or a ship built specifically for applications.
The vessel used only for oil storage (not processing) is called floating storage and unloading (FSO) vessel.
