Metallographic Analysis

Apr 24, 2023

Metallographic analysis is one of the most important techniques used in materials science and engineering. It involves the study of the microstructure of materials, particularly metals and alloys, using optical and electron microscopy. This type of analysis helps to determine the effects of processing, fabrication, and service conditions on the structure and properties of materials. It can also provide insights into the mechanisms of material failures.

The aim of metallographic analysis is to obtain information about the structure of a material at the microscopic level by preparing a specimen and analyzing the surface using sophisticated instruments. The analysis usually begins with preparing a polished and etched specimen, which can reveal the microstructure of the material. A microscope is then used to observe the microstructure, which includes features such as grain size, texture, and the presence of defects such as cracks, pores, and inclusions.

Metallographic analysis

There are several methods of metallographic analysis commonly used

1. Optical microscopy

2. Scanning electron microscopy

3. Transmission electron microscopy

4. X-ray diffraction

5. Electron backscatter diffraction

Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of method depends on the specific needs of the analysis.

The testing items for metallographic analysis including

1. Welding metallographic inspection

2. Metallographic examination of casting iron

3. Quality inspection of heat treatment

4. Inspection and evaluation for the microstructure of various metal products and raw materials

5. Inspection of macroscopic defects in casting iron, casting steel, non-ferrous metals and parent materials

6. Metal hardness (HV, HRC, HB, HL) measurement

7. Assessment of non-metallic inclusion content;

8. Evaluating carburated case depth or decarburized layer
