Manufacturing Process of ASTM A36 Standard Steel Pipes

Products Description

ASTM A36 is a carbon structural steel standard established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, bridges, and other fields. A36 steel pipes are typically manufactured using welding processes such as high-frequency resistance welding (ERW) or submerged arc welding (SAW), rather than seamless processes. The following are the main manufacturing processes and their characteristics:

Raw material preparation

a.Steel plate/steel strip: Carbon steel plate or hot-rolled steel strip that meets the ASTM A36 standard is used, with typical chemical composition as follows:

C (carbon) Mn (manganese) Si (silicon) P (phosphorus) S (sulfur)

b.Pre-treatment: The steel strip must undergo acid washing to remove oxide scale and be flattened to ensure subsequent forming quality.

Forming Process

(1) High-Frequency Resistance Welding (ERW)

a. Applicable Steel Tubes: Medium and small diameters, such as water pipes, structural tubes, etc.

b. Process Flow:

Uncoiling and Flattening The steel strip is uncoiled and straightened.
Forming The strip is gradually rolled into a tubular shape using multiple rollers.
High-frequency welding Utilizes 150–400 kHz high-frequency current to heat the edges, followed by pressure welding (without welding wire).
Removal of internal and external burrs Scraping off weld spatter to ensure a smooth weld seam.
Sizing and cooling Controlling outer diameter precision, followed by water cooling to set the shape.

c. Features:

Low cost and high efficiency.

Weld seam strength can reach over 90% of the base material.

(2) Submerged arc welding (SAW)

a. Applicable steel pipes: Large-diameter thick-walled pipes, such as oil and natural gas transmission pipes.

b. Process flow:

Steel plate processing JCOE or UOE forming process (pre-bending → gradual pressing and forming).
Pre-welding Fixed welds are made using gas metal arc welding (GMAW).
Multi-wire submerged arc welding Welding with 4–5 weld wires in series, featuring deep penetration and high efficiency.
Heat treatment To eliminate residual stress and improve mechanical properties.

c. Features:

Seamless steel pipes with high pressure-bearing capacity, suitable for high-pressure pipelines.

High equipment investment, suitable for small-batch customization.

Heat Treatment and Finishing

Weld Heat Treatment Some A36 welded pipes need to undergo normalizing or annealing to eliminate welding stress.
Straightening Ensure straightness complies with standards such as ASTM A500/A53.
Surface Treatment Sandblasting and galvanizing (hot-dip or electroplating) can be performed to improve corrosion resistance.

Testing and Certification

a. Non-destructive testing:

Ultrasonic testing (UT): Detects weld defects.

Eddy current testing (ET): Suitable for detecting surface cracks in thin-walled pipes.

b. Mechanical property testing:

Tensile test: Ensures that tensile strength and yield strength comply with standard specifications.

   Bending test: Verifies weld toughness.

c.Hydrostatic test: Maintains standard pressure for 5 seconds without leakage.

Standards and Alternative Materials

a.ASTM A36 Steel Pipe Manufacturing Standards:

Structural pipes: ASTM A500 (cold-formed welded pipes)

Pressure pipes: ASTM A53 (galvanized or black pipes).

b.National Standard Alternatives:

Q235B (similar mechanical properties, but slightly different composition).

Q345 (higher strength, can be used as a substitute for lower grades).

Summary

ASTM A36 steel pipes are mainly produced using welding processes (ERW/SAW), which are characterized by low cost and high efficiency. They are suitable for applications in construction, machinery, and low-pressure fluid conveyance. The core manufacturing process includes forming welding heat treatment inspection, and must comply with standards such as ASTM A500/A53. For higher pressure-bearing performance, seamless steel pipes or alloy steel pipes can be used as alternatives.
